The term both ECW and ICE stand for Extracellular water and Intracellular water respectively.as we know, the amount of water we drink daily is naturally distribute in two major compartments of these one is Extracellular and the other is intracellular compartment.
Here, I would like present a brief discussion on both of them.
ECW (Extracellular water)
ECW is a short form of Extracellular water. Extracellular water is the water usually found outside the cells that helping particular tissue to function well. That means, in different words, Extracellular water or ECW is the body fluid in which the cells and tissues are simplified. Through the Extracellular water or fluid or ECW, the nutrients and other supplements are served to the membrane bound cells. Sodium, potassium, calcium, chlorides, and bicarbonates are the main components of ECW. But, very rarely the presence of protein found here in ECW or Extracellular water. The potential of hydrogen in Extracellular water is nearly 7.4.
It comprises 3 components i.e. blood plasma, Trans cellular fluid and tissue fluid. In extracellular or ECW the concentration of both sodium ions and potassium ions is high and low respectively.
Anyways, of total body water 45 % is Extracellular water and of total body weight 27 % is also extracellular water or ECW. Again, of total body fluid volume 23 L is Extracellular fluid.
ICW (Intracellular water)
ICW is a short form of Intracellular water. It is usually known as the cytoplasmic matrix or as the cytosol, which is a kind of liquid. This liquid has a lot of properties that help to ensure the process of cellular are being taken place well avoiding any type of hassle. Intracellular water (ICW) is the water usually found inside the cells that possessing dissolved ions and some other components that are very important for cellular process. But the ICW is limited only to the inside of the cell. ICW or intracellular water comprises the cytosol. That means, the component of ECW is cytosol and the member of the cell is the boundary of cytosol. In ICW or Intracellular water) the concentration of both sodium ions and potassium ions is low and high respectively.
However, of total body water 55% is Intracellular water and of total body weight 33% is also intracellular water or ECW. Again, of total body fluid volume 19 L is intracellular fluids.
ECW & ICW and weight loss
Losing weight is one of the most concerning issues specially who are possessing excessive weight comparing with other factors like- gender, height, age etc. Since abnormal weight gain may trigger various complexities for health that is because everyone should be very careful of it. Anyways, as far as I have learnt about the both ECW and ICW, weight loss is rarely connected with these both terms. But you go for further investigation if you get anything on them that is connected to weight loss.
However, intracellular water and extracellular water both collectively make up the total of body water or fluids, but not both of them occur in the same position. That means, intracellular fluid is occurred inside the cell membrane and the extracellular is occurred outside the cell membrane. Here, the cell membrane works as the margin for every fluid. Tissue fluid, Trans cellular fluid, blood plasma are the components of the ECW or Extracellular water or fluid and the only component of Intracellular water or ICE is Cytosol. Therefore, the main dissimilarity between both is their relative position inside the body.
